In England's Green and Pleasant Land
As one of the only two Lancaster Bombers still flying in the world today, the Memorial Mynarski Lancaster, named after Pilot Officer Andrew Mynarski, made a visit from it's base at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Ontario to Durham Tees Valley Airport, known during the war as RAF Middleton St George airfield, where Andrew Mynarski was based, Mynarski was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross after his attempt to rescue a colleague when their Lancaster was shot down in June 1944.
The Lancaster is painted in the colours of Mynarski's Royal Canadian Air Force 419 'Moose' Squadron.
As a lasting tribute to Andrew Mynarski, an impressive statue is situated within the airport grounds outside the St George Hotel, which itself served as the officer's mess for air crews during the war.
