A boat sits on the beach at Redcar on the northeast coast of England. But it's not what it seems, it was placed there for the filming (on November 7th 2022) of a new BBC series 'Boat Story'. Actors Daisy Haggard and Paterson Joseph have been spotted in the seaside town just as filming on the series began. The two performers are known across the country for their roles in the comedies Back to Life and Peep Show , respectively.

Roseberry Topping stood proud in the clearing in woods ablaze with colour, the sound of the birds and a bright blue sky completed the canvas on a spring topping day.

In August 2006 the glitz of the film world arrived in Redcar, the town fired into life with the hiring of local people to play extras in the blockbuster film ‘Atonement’ which starred among others Vanessa Redgrave, Saoirse Ronan, Romola Garai, Keira Knightley and the main star of the film James McAvoy and here he was in Redcar !. The film directed by Joe Wright adapted from the book by Ian McEwan, centred around the second world war and Redcar beach was used as a back drop for Dunkirk (In my opinion the best scene in the film !). A red carpet premier was held in Redcar’s Regent Cinema the night before its UK release.

But as you wind through the path you come to an opening and this trickle of water suddenly explodes into a thunderous raging river that is the Tees as it gathers pace from its birth on the heather covered fells at the top of the North Pennines, to the edge of a spectacular 21 metre drop to the pool below, this is High force, this is …. ‘The Force’.

At Saltburn-by-the-Sea, on north Yorkshire’s coast, you will find golden sands, café’s, bars, amusements, an iconic Victorian pier, and a stunning funicular cliff lift. Together with the thriving surfing culture, this makes for a great seaside destination for many. The other thing that this part of the coast is famed for is its changeable weather, and so as I was wandering along the lower promenade, watching the skies changing colour rapidly, I noticed the fantastic piece of art showing a person blowing, not bubbles, but Butterflies, decorating the side of one of the huts. I could not help but think about ‘The Butterfly Effect’, whereas a single flutter of a Butterfly’s wings can change the way the wind blows, well this is just used to simplify the idea that any situation where there’s a small change is supposed to be the cause of larger consequences.

Middlesbrough’s iconic Transporter Bridge has been the area’s landmark since opening in 1911. It is the longest working Transporter bridge in the world, a rare type of bridge with fewer than two dozen built. There are just twelve that continue to be used today including one in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I always view the bridge as not belonging to this time and so it always takes me to a past era transported back in time.

The statue, by Shropshire artist Jane Robbins, captures the working class hero in a typically relaxed pose, but sadly (a sign of the times) minus his trademark cigarette. The monument now has pride of place outside the Harbour of Refuge pub, in Croft Terrace.

Actors Daisy Haggard and Paterson Joseph have been spotted in the seaside town just as filming on the series began. The two performers are known across the country for their roles in the comedies Back to Life and Peep Show , respectively.

The Avro Lancaster bomber first came into service in March 1942 and, as the main RAF heavy bomber, soon became as iconic a part of the British air war as the Super Marine Spitfire.
The aircraft had an impressive lifting capacity. Weighing 36,900 lb, it was able to haul an additional 33,100lb in fuel and bombs. The Lancaster had a long, unobstructed bomb bay that allowed it to carry the RAF's largest bombs, up to and including the 12,000 lb bombs.
The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund lists 55,573 men as having died serving with Bomber Command during the war, one of which was my uncle George William Prescott - Sergeant Air Bomber 103 Squadron, although I never got to meet him I have always thought about him, a young man who fought for our freedom and died at 20 years of age, shot down over Berlin (He is buried just outside of Berlin where they keep the graveside in immaculate condition). My mother still cries when reminiscing about her older brother, I’ve always felt that I missed out on a special person in my life.

John who was a Musician, writer, producer and surfer, often practised his art overlooking the sea.

Cattersty Sands is a long sand and shingle beach hidden away near the village of Skinningrove north Yorkshire. The beach is intersected by a rocky pier which dates back to the areas mining days.
This area of Yorkshire has a long history of iron-ore mining. The old jetty was built in 1886 for loading steamboats which transported the ore to Middlesbrough. The village houses the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum. Cattersty Sands is a good destination for those seeking a bit of tranquillity and the 109-mile long Cleveland Way walking route passes adjacent to the beach.

<image:caption>Odin's Fire - Roseberry Topping, Ayton Banks, Great Ayton, North Yorkshire.

What a sight Roseberry Topping is, standing at around 1,000 ft towering over the surrounding landscape and in particular the village of Great Ayton, famed for being the boyhood home of Captain James Cook. Roseberry was held in special regard by the Vikings who settled in Cleveland in the medieval period and was believed to be a place of worship to the Norse god Odin.
On this evening we (my partner Tracy and I) had made our way up the winding path to the top of the cliff face on the Captain Cook’s Monument side what seemed to be just an exploratory trip as the weather was not quite right for what I was looking for, but that was about to change. After viewing the scene and taking a few shots we packed up and were about to descend, when, as it does in this part of the world, the weather calmed as the sun set and storm clouds rolled in. This was the cue to hastily get the camera on the tripod and frame the scene. As we know the conditions can change in a flash, then with a few clicks of the shutter I had my picture and with a last restful look, the landscape had changed again to a flat scene with sky to match to accommodate nightfall.
I just love the idea of the Norse god of war raging over the ‘Topping’ and producing Odin’s Fire.

When I moved to the north east, it was instilled in me that the steel works was the heart of Redcar and indeed the north east of England. This image was taken in the early years of my arrival, when, although I didn’t know it at the time the industry was sadly already in a state of decline. I tried to capture the power and strength of the beating heart of the steel industry sitting in an almost alien landscape, I framed the image so that the railings lead you into the landscape and guide you to the works themselves, that will always be to me Tees Steel.

My new home Marske-by-the-Sea, the beach a ten minute leisurely stroll, how mad is that for an Islington lad? Sometimes I have to stop myself taking the scene for granted as it would be easy when you live in one location for a time. It didn’t take much persuading when I was approached by Paul (a regular at Marske Cricket Club at the time) about taking a picture of the beach scene for an anniversary present for his wife (the image was turned into a painting effect as he had seen a similar painting and wanted the same scene). I can’t help it for a London boy to spend as much time ... ‘On the Beach’.

"Sinterlation” is a sculpture on Redcar's Esplanade.
Created by renowned sculptor Ian Randall as a lasting tribute to the town’s fishing and steel connections, its base features four vessels, designed to represent the town’s relationship with its fishing fleet, while four large stainless steel chains showcase the links to the nearby blast furnace.

The steel industry in England has steadily declined, the works at Redcar once the heart of the town was sadly not immune to this decline. Trying to capture the power and strength of the beating heart of the steel industry sitting in an almost alien landscape I watched, and at the time wondered if I had indeed seen … ‘The Last Smoke’, sadly it was to be.

Once every now and again the sea gets mad, gets angry. It wants it's sand back, and with that, sometimes it gets so angry that it snatches it right off the beach to give us a glimpse of life around 6,000 years ago. A petrified forest lays quietly hidden beneath, once the sounds of animals and birds would have been heard, now the sound of the sea echoes around this forest off of Redcar town.

On the northeast coast of England stands the proud town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea. It has a history of fishing, smuggling and vast amounts of Victorian visitors to its shores. In May 1869 Saltburn pier was opened at a length of 1,500 feet. After a storm had removed 300 feet of the pier in October 1875 and in 1924 being struck by the 'SS Ovenbag' and other numerous storms, the pier (or as I call it 'Old Barnacle Legs') now stands at a length of 681 feet. The pier is indeed treading water.

On a trip to the north Yorkshire moors on a crisp autumn morning I spotted a small stream that made a break in the landscape, something that added to the dramatic scene before me. I had just set my camera on the tripod and was ready to press the shutter when I heard a Land Rover bearing down on me (I was thinking to myself that maybe I had strayed on to someone’s land and was expecting a mouthful). The twisted shipwreck of the fishing trawler 'Admiral von Tromp' lies on the rocky shoreline of Saltwick Bay, approximately one mile to the east of Whitby on the north Yorkshire coast. Standing proud in the distance lies Black Nab and in the far distance to the left is Whale Nab, which will also be lost to the sea in the future.

Danby Castle Bridge built in 1396, was largely rebuilt in 1717 by George Duck of Danby. The carving at the centre of the bridge is the Neville coat of arms, who’s family owned the manor of Danby in the 15th century. The bridge is a fine example of a humpbacked Packhorse bridge, built with a high arch to cope with high river levels from draining rivers on the moors.
